Botox is all about prevention. The best wrinkle is the one you never get. Botox was FDA approved in 2002 with Dysport closely following in 2009. Dosage on all 3 areas approved by the company and FDA approved is 64 units. This includes crows feet, glabellar, and the forehead. So don’t expect 16 units to treat all those creases. Botulinum toxin works on the neuromuscular junction and prevents muscle contraction. If the muscle can’t move, the skin won’t wrinkle, preventing you from making a disgusted face when your boss says you have to stay late for work or your wife makes the dang meatloaf that you hate for dinner. If you have static wrinkles or wrinkles at rest it will definitely take time to erase those lines so be patient.
What to expect during your appointment, treatment is very quick and your provider will go over medical history, goals, cost, provide education. Botox takes 2 full weeks to work and lasts 3-4 months based off of your body metabolism. Botox gradually wears off with full movement generally returning 3-4 months from the time of injection. The more consistent you are in getting botox, the less you have to get and the less you have to come. Over time your muscles are so weak that they don’t require as much toxin. If you get it once and never get it again don’t worry, they won’t come back worse, you just go back to your old self. There is no downtime, but you do leave the office with bee sting bumps which resolve quickly, so your boss won’t know where you ran off to on your lunch break. As anything that involves a needle, there is a chance of bruising.

Pre injection check list for Botox:
- Make sure you arrive 5 minutes prior to your appointment for check in process. We will have you fill your consent and health form prior to your service.
- Minimal to no make up if possible
- Eat and drink prior to your appointment
- Do not consume alcohol or take ibuprofen 2 days prior to appointment as this increases bruising
- Let us know about important upcoming events in your life so we can decide if its the right time to inject
- Let us know if you tend to pass out like Scarlet from Gone with the Wind.
- If you are on blood thinners you must notify office prior to your appointment. Do not go off of your medication unless it was approved by your doctor.
- Sustain from smoking a couple hour prior to injection.
- If you have had any type of eye surgery of facial surgery you must be cleared by your doctor caring for you prior to being injected
- If you work out please do it prior as you can not work out for two days after
- Please wait 2 weeks after you have had any laser treatment to the face. Allow yourself to fully heal
- If you are taking muscle relaxers you must notify your provider
- You are not eligible for botox if you have: Myasthenia Gravis, Hepatitis, Eaton Lambert Disorder, Muscle weakness, eye disease, ALS.
Post injection care for Botox:
- After injections you will have raised bumps on your forehead. These are normal and will go down in 15 minutes
- Keep moving your face and expressing. This helps product to settle and bumps to dissipate
- No rubbing or massaging area
- No lying down 3 hours post injection. If you must lay down just prop yourself up on pillows
- No hot tubs, saunas, tanning, or sun bathing
- No exercise for 24-48 hours
- Avoid make up to treated area
- A headache may occur in 2-3 days post injection. That’s completely normal and does not happen in every client
- Botox takes a full two weeks to see effect. If you are not seeing the results you desire more product may be required at an additional charge.
